Exceptional visual arts exhibition inside a concrete basement

Image
Deep down two floors underneath central London, a large concrete basement has been taken over by a display of lighting art that is as varied as it is remarkable. (c) ianVisits Fusing sounds, lighting effects, and the dark concrete basement space, the exhibition at 180 Studios is by the artist collective United Visual Artists (UVA), who have filled large empty spaces to mark their 20th anniversary. There are also few tickets left for sale on their website. It takes a moment to get used to the darkness as you enter, and walk into a room bombarded with numbers and countdown clocks on a large wall, all using information from internet data feeds. It’s both oddly captivating and slightly scary as if you can imagine a malevolent AI computer hacking into reality to take over the nuclear codes. One of the more disconcerting displays are three large swinging lit pendulums, which swing over a steep slope down into the depths of the building. All in a room slightly smokey to obscure

Canada, the Netherlands take Syria to top UN court over torture claims

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The Netherlands and Canada are taking Syria’s government to the United Nations’ highest court on Tuesday, accusing Damascus of massive human rights violations against its own people. “Since 2011, Syrians have been tortured, murdered, sexually assaulted, forcibly disappeared and subjected to chemical weapon attacks on a mass scale,” the Netherlands and Canada said when they launched the case at the International Court of Justice in June. “Twelve years on, human rights violations at the hands of the Syrian regime persist,” they added. A group of Syrians gathered outside the court before the hearing, carrying photos of people they claim are victims of torture and enforced disappearance, and holding banners emblazoned with the text “End torture now!” and “Where are they.” Syria’s conflict started with peaceful protests against President Bashar Assad’s government in March 2011 but quickly morphed into a full-blown civil war after the government’s brutal

Donald Trump Touts New Travel Ban In Fear-Laden Speech

Former President Donald Trump used the ongoing conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip to stoke fears on Monday about immigration into the United States, pledging to reimpose a travel ban on people coming from predominantly Muslim countries. “As president, I will once again stand strongly with the state of Israel, and we will cut off the money to the terrorists on day one,” Trump, who is running for the 2024 GOP nomination, said during a campaign rally in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He added he would “reimpose the travel ban on terror-afflicted countries.” Trump instituted such a ban shortly after he took office in 2017, barring people from seven countries from entering the United States. Human rights groups were outraged and called the move inhumane and discriminatory. The ban sparked fierce protests and widespread condemnation, although Trump has continued to tout it long after leaving the White House. President Joe Biden reversed Trump’s policy shortly after taking of

Supreme Court told Rwanda is a 'less attractive place' but 'safe' to deport asylum seekers

Rwanda is “less attractive” than the UK but is still “safe” to deport asylum seekers to, the Government told the Supreme Court yesterday. Lawyers acting for the Home Office opened the Government’s challenge to a Court of Appeal ruling in June that the multi-million-pound deal to deport asylum seekers to the east African nation was unlawful. Yesterday, Sir James Eadie KC, for the Home Office, told a panel of five justices both countries were committed to the plan with “very powerful” practical incentives for Rwanda to comply with assurances given. He said the policy to remove people to “a country less attractive” than the UK, “but nevertheless safe”, was lawful and explained that the Government attached “considerable importance” to its deportation policy. Sir James told the hearing there was a “serious and pressing need to take effective steps” to stop those taking the “life-threatening journey” from a safe country. He later referenced concerns that had been raised over

OPINION – Firepower and coordination of Hamas attack on Israel suggests extensive foreign support

T he attack out of Gaza at dawn by rockets, commandos with bulldozers, hang gliders and small boats came as a total surprise. By dusk at least 300 had been killed, Palestinian and Israeli, and thousands injured and displaced. As night fell, Israeli bombed more buildings in Gaza City, trying to strike the military headquarters of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who must have been planning the offensive for months. But no one in the Israeli Defence Forces, intelligence and domestic security arms, Shinbet, seemed to have an inkling of what was in the wind. The failure is reminiscent of a similar one at the same time of the year, round the great Jewish festival of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in 1973, fifty years ago. The government under Golda Meir was caught unawares by a major assault into the Golan Heights by Syrian forces in the north and across the Suez Canal into Israeli – occupied Sinai in the south. It was revenge for the stunning Arab losses in the Six Days War of 1967.

Olivia Wilde takes aim at Taylor Swift and faces serious backlash

Olivia Wilde spoke about Taylor Swift’s dating life (Picture: REUTERS / GETTY) Olivia Wilde has been catching some serious heat over the weekend after she appeared to take aim at Taylor Swift’s dating life.    The 39-year-old Don’t Worry Darling director poked fun at the recent mass coverage of 33-year-old Taylor’s dating life. The Grammy-winning hitmaker has dominated headlines in recent weeks thanks to her rumoured romance with NFL star Travis Kelce. Taking to Instagram on Friday, Olivia reposted a meme that read: ‘I wish Taylor Swift was in love with a climate scientist.’ She’s still facing serious criticism over the move, with disgruntled Taylor fans continuing to call Olivia out on X, formerly known as Twitter, despite the fact the director and actress appeared to be commenting on the mass hysteria surrounding Taylor’s romantic interests as opposed to the A-lister’s dating life itself. In response to the meme, one person wrote: ‘Olivia Wilde posting this when she ha

The US, not China, should take the lead on AI

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) should be used as “tools of opportunity, not as weapons of oppression,” President Biden remarked recently. He’s right. But this exhortation makes his subsequent vow to work directly with “our competitors” to harness the power of AI “for good” all the more curious. Working with our competitors, like China, would only empower the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to write the rules of the road for AI. And we don’t want China in the driver’s seat. China is at the bleeding edge of using emerging technologies for oppression – both at home and abroad. Journalists and human-rights activists have long pointed to a state-run data system that uses AI to flag whole categories of people for detention in the western Xinjiang region. If international cooperation requires a common vision for how the technology is used, then America and China couldn’t be further apart. (Getty images)

Lavenham

Image
Day out: Lavenham Today it’s a small Suffolk village well off the beaten track – roughly west of Ipswich and south of Bury St Edmunds. But 500 years ago Lavenham was one of the wealthiest towns in the country thanks to all the money to be made from sheep, specifically the dyeing, spinning and weaving of woollen fleeces. Merchants grew rich by selling fine cloth created by outsourced labour, exporting it across Europe and beyond, and by the 15th century Lavenham had become a watchword for quality. But over the 16th century the business model started to fail, with Suffolk’s wool towns undercut first by Dutch refugees in Colchester and then by cheaper imports from the continent. Lavenham’s swift fall from grace meant that residents no longer had the money to replace their homes and so an incredible cluster of late medieval/early Tudor timber houses has survived to the present day. Dozens of the most central houses are oak-framed, infilled with wattle and daub and perhaps lime

Hazelnut crop levels are lower than usual in Turkey, due to poor weather conditions and damage from insects. This means prices will soar and cause shortages in the run up to the Christmas season, when sales of Ferrero Rocher usually peak, said retail experts. Last year, Quality Street was forced to remove green and orange foil wrappers from some tins thanks to a shortage of the material, recalled The Telegraph . Taylor Swift Skips the Chiefs-Vikings Game in Minnesota Amid Travis Kelce Dating Rumors

Swifties and NFL fans alike have been waiting all day Sunday (October 8) to see if Taylor Swift would show up at the latest Kansas City Chiefs game, but it looks like she’s sitting this one out. The 33-year-old singer-songwriter has made headlines after attending two games to support Travis Kelce amid rampant rumors that the two are dating, even sitting next to his mom Donna Kelce for a game. However, The Athletic has confirmed she’s not in Minnesota for the game this time around. “If you were tuning in to the Chiefs-Vikings game to see Taylor Swift , you’ll just have to picture her in your wildest dreams,” they wrote, adding: “She is not in attendance in Minnesota to watch Travis Kelce .” Travis Kelce started this year as one of two famous brothers playing football in the NFL. He went on to win the 2023 Super Bowl with his team the Kansas City Chiefs, making him a very recognizable figure. However, the 34-year-old tight end’s star has only continued to rise. In fact,

Israel-Palestine latest news: Hizbollah and Israel trade fire after Hamas attack

Israel exchanged fire with Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hizbollah, 24 hours after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack that sparked a war. Hizbollah claimed responsibility for the attack that hit a disputed area along the Golan heights, where the borders of Lebanon, Israel and Syria meet. Israel responded with drones and said it hit a Hizbollah position. Hizbollah says it is on its “way to liberating what remains of our occupied Lebanese land and in solidarity with the victorious Palestinian resistance.” The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are still battling Hamas incursions in eight locations. While the exchange of fire raises the prospect of a broader regional war, Hizbollah’s choice to strike the disputed areas instead of directly into northern Israeli towns alongside Hamas, suggests it is not currently ready to risk wider confrontation and fully join the fight. Further escalations with Hizbollah on the border risks drawing in one of Israel’s most fierce enemies int
