The secret behind the Mets success in stolen-base category

When the Mets send runner to steal a base, it’s because first-base coach Wayne Kirby thinks there is “almost a 99 percent chance” that runner is going to be safe. Actually, Kirby is underselling the odds, at least when it comes to the success rate over the last 44 games: On Thursday, the Mets extended a franchise record during their 3-2 loss to the Brewers to 35 consecutive stolen bases without getting caught, dating to May 10. “We’re paying attention to detail,” said Kirby, who oversees base running. “Everything on paper is all about numbers, but each pitcher has a tendency of doing something different that starts the clock early. I try to find that.” As a contrast to the many disappointing offensive numbers during the first half of the season, the Mets have weaponized the stolen base with a MLB-best 91 percent effectiveness (up from 73.8 percent last season). Yet nine teams have more than their 61 steals, so it seems like running more frequently could be a way to buy time unt...

Haley says Trump did 'too little' about China threats warns of global conflict if Ukraine falls

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday criticized former President Donald Trump for being too friendly to China during his time in office, while also warning that weak support for Ukraine would “only encourage” China to invade Taiwan. Haley, a Republican presidential candidate running against Trump, said in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute that Trump was “almost singularly focused” on the U.S.-China trade relationship but ultimately did “too little about the rest of the Chinese threat.” Specifically, Haley noted that Trump failed to rally U.S. allies “against the Chinese threat” and that he had congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China. “That sends a wrong message to the world,” Haley said. “Chinese communism must be condemned, never congratulated.” Haley’s comments, promoted by her presidential campaign as “a major foreign policy speech,” came a week and a half after U.S. S...

California Prisons Struggle to Process Inmates' Gender-Affirming Surgery

Prisons across California are currently struggling to process an increasing number of requests by inmates to undergo gender-affirming care. CalMatters, a nonpartisan newsroom committed to explaining California politics and policy, reported on Monday that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is seeing double the amount of prisoners requesting gender-affirming surgeries since last year. In its report, CalMatters added that the estimated increase in gender-affirming surgery requests is based on new budget documents. Defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), gender-affirming care encompasses any social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were born with. CalMatters’ report comes over a year after California Governor Gavin Newsom signed “The Transgender Respect, Agency and Dignity Act” in 2020, which allowed “incarcerated transgen...

US Coast Guard declares recovery of items from sea floor as priority in Titanic sub investigation

Sign up to our Evening Headlines email for your daily guide to the latest news Sign up to our free US Evening Headlines email The US Coast Guard says that its priority in its investigation into the fatal Titanic sub implosion is now the “recovery of items from the sea floor.” All five people aboard the OceanGate Titan submersible were killed as it dived down to the wreck of the famed liner in the Atlantic last week. The Coast Guard opened a marine board investigation on Friday and is working with the FBI to salvage debris on the sea floor at a depth of more than two miles below the surface. Captain Jason Neubauer, chief investigator with the US Coast Guard, told reporters on Sunday, that that the “priority of the investigation is to recover items from the sea floor.” An ROV discovered debris from the Titan around 1,600ft from the bow of the liner days after it lost contact with its mother ship 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive. Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood a...

It’s all gone. I know it when I hear and see it and MAN it’s been a minute.” “It was honestly so weird,” says vocalist and guitarist Katherine Parlour about their turn of fate. We’re sitting in a central London boozer; Parlour and lead guitarist Ella Risi are opposite me, nursing two pints of Guinness – a situation not unlike the one they had been in when they first discovered Love was a fan. As Greece's center-right heads for a landslide fringe parties jostle to squeeze into Parliament

For free real time breaking news alerts sent straight to your inbox sign up to our breaking news emails Sign up to our free breaking news emails With the formerly ascendant, Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn party broken, its leadership in prison, and the anti-Western left defanged, Greece’s political fringes are looking more gauche than sinister. Still, up to five small parties — three on the far right and two on the far left — could conceivably reach the 3% support needed to enter Parliament in Sunday’s repeat elections, despite a swing back to mainstream politicians as the scars of Greece’s 10-year financial crisis gradually heal. That would increase the parties in Parliament from five to a maximum nine, sapping the majority of the center-right New Democracy, or ND, which is expected to retain its 20-percentage-point lead from a first vote last month but wants an absolute majority to avoid the need to form a coalition. If ND finds it can’t govern alone, it could seek a third e...

Kim Petras pays a cheeky tribute to THAT iconic Fergie cartwheel performance on the Today show

Image
Kim Petras paid tribute to Fergie while performing on the Today show in New York City on Friday. The 30-year-old songstress modeled a long-sleeved top with the image of the Black Eyed Peas singer doing cartwheels during her now-iconic performance on the same show in 2008. The Unholy hitmaker — who looked gorgeous in a green bikini while vacationing in Miami last month — teamed the crop top with a black micro skirt and over-the-knee socks.  The blonde bombshell also sported an oversized leather jacket and stylish sunglasses that she later shed during her performance.  And while she did not do any cartwheels, she gave a contagiously energetic mini-concert and delivered flawless vocals. The ugly envy of the left over the dead Titanic tourists shows them for what they are so much for Be Kind

I ADMIRE bravery. I admire adventurers. And I was brought up in a Britain which admired these things too. But much of our country has changed. Where we used to admire adventure we have become cautious and safety obsessed. 6 The doomed Ocean Gate sub was a tale of tragedy – despite the Left trying to politicise it Credit: The Mega Agency Where we used to admire heroism we now favour moaning and victimhood. Where we once admired success we have come to elevate failure. There could hardly be a clearer demonstration of this ugly shift than in certain responses to the submersible tragedy at the site of the Titanic. It was confirmed this week that the lives of all five people on board were lost due to a “catastrophic implosion”. They included 19-year-old Suleman Dawood and his father. It is unimaginable what his grieving, widowed mother is going through now. Ordinarily, the people who talk about “kindness” and “compassion” would be kind and compassionate at...
