Canada, the Netherlands take Syria to top UN court over torture claims

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The Netherlands and Canada are taking Syria’s government to the United Nations’ highest court on Tuesday, accusing Damascus of massive human rights violations against its own people. “Since 2011, Syrians have been tortured, murdered, sexually assaulted, forcibly disappeared and subjected to chemical weapon attacks on a mass scale,” the Netherlands and Canada said when they launched the case at the International Court of Justice in June. “Twelve years on, human rights violations at the hands of the Syrian regime persist,” they added. Donald Trump Touts New Travel Ban In Fear-Laden Speech

Former President Donald Trump used the ongoing conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip to stoke fears on Monday about immigration into the United States, pledging to reimpose a travel ban on people coming from predominantly Muslim countries. “As president, I will once again stand strongly with the state of Israel, and we will cut off the money to the terrorists on day one,” Trump, who is running for the 2024 GOP nomination, said during a campaign rally in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He added he would “reimpose the travel ban on terror-afflicted countries.” Trump instituted such a ban shortly after he took office in 2017, barring people from seven countries from entering the United States.
