Alvie Carlton Scott III said he heard gunshots while he was on the beach. He hid behind a tree and then fled the area after a police officer told people to run. Witness Jamie Ward said several young men were fighting in front of the stores when one pulled a gun and started shooting. Police said there would be a heavy presence of officers as the investigation continues. Officials have also set up an area for family members to reunite. It comes as more than a dozen people were killed in shootings across the United States over Memorial Day weekend. Hollywood Beach is a popular beach destination about 11 miles south of Fort Lauderdale and 20 miles north of Miami.  The beach was packed with more visitors than usual due to the Memorial Day holiday.  Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy in a statement said: “Thank you to the good Samaritans, paramedics, police and emergency room doctors and nurses for their immediate response to aid the victims of today’s shooting.” Source...

PARIS — A United Nations committee is meeting Monday in Paris to work on what is intended to be a landmark treaty to bring an end to global plastic pollution, but there is little agreement yet on what the outcome should be. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for Plastics is charged with developing the first international, legally binding treaty on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. This is the second of five meetings due to take place to complete the negotiations by the end of 2024. At the first meeting, held six months ago in Uruguay, some countries pressed for global mandates, some for national solutions and others for both. Humanity produces more than 430 million tons of plastic annually, two-thirds of which are short-lived products that soon become waste, filling the ocean and, often, working their way into the human food chain, the United Nations Environment Program said in April. A woman whose daughter took her own life after being raped as a child has revealed she’s drawing comfort from the fact the 20-year-old saved four people’s lives, thanks to donating her organs.  Shannon Hackling was groomed and repeatedly raped by 19-year-old Barry Nash, who is now 28, when she was 12-year-old. Nash was convicted of six counts of rape of a child under the age of 13, and was jailed for six years in 2014. His sentence was later increased to nine years by the Court of Appeal.  But Shannon never recovered from the toll the abuse took on her, and entered a spiral of self-harm, and took her own life in May 2022.   Following her daughter’s death last spring, her mother Tracey is raising awareness of organ donors and is campaigning for better mental health services for young people who have experienced trauma. Russian propagandists are pushing for the country’s economy ministry to force people to work an extra day a week to support Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine. According to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), the “Soviet-style” rhetoric would push for people to work with no extra pay.
