Warning SNP's key waste targets off track despite delayed DRS roll-out

Environmental campaigners have scolded Humza Yousaf’s government for setting ambitious targets which are “then shelved when businesses complain”. The latest statistics from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) shows that Scotland is only on track to meet one of its four key waste targets in 2025. According to the latest statistics by Sepa, for 2021, Scotland is off track meeting a proposed landfill ban in 2025, as well as recycling 70 per cent of waste. As of 2021, 30.2% of waste was being sent to landfill, while only 56.3% of waste was recycled. But there is some good news, with Sepa data showing that against a key target to reduce total waste by 15% against 2011 levels, that has been reduced by 19.9% between 2011 and 2021. Data f...

Texas border city struggles with large arrival of migrants

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Shelters in a Texas city struggled to find space Saturday for migrants who authorities say have abruptly begun crossing by the thousands from Mexico, testing a stretch of the U.S. border that is typically equipped to handle large groups of people fleeing poverty and violence. The pace of arrivals in Brownsville appeared to catch the city on the southernmost tip of Texas off guard, stretching social services and putting an overnight shelter in an uncommon position of turning people away. Officials say more than 15,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have illegally crossed the river near Brownsville since last week. That is a sharp rise from the 1,700 migrants that Border Patrol agents encountered in the first two weeks of April, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials. “It’s a quite concerning because the logistical challenge that we encounter is massive for us,” said Gloria Chavez, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley ...

This Is What the Right-Wing Takeover of a Progressive College Looks Like

Whatever New College’s administration does, this will likely be the last year classes like the ones Sharf is taking are offered, because a bill making its way through the Florida Legislature requires the review of curriculums “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States.” The sense of dread on campus, however, goes beyond what’s happening in Tallahassee. Eliana Salzhauer, whose 17-year-old son is a New College economics student, compared the seemingly inexorable transformation of the school to Twitter under Elon Musk: It looked the same at first, even as it gradually degraded into a completely different experience. “They are turning a top-rated academic institution into a third-rate athletic facility,” she said. Salzhauer was referring, in part, to the hiring of Mariano Jimenez, who previously worked at Speir’s Inspiration Academy, as athletic director and head baseball coach, even though the...

Lakers destroy Grizzlies to advance into second round of NBA playoffs

Image
LOS ANGELES — Anthony Davis had 16 points and 14 rebounds while blocking five shots in a spectacular defensive performance, D’Angelo Russell scored a career playoff-high 31 points and the Los Angeles Lakers completed their first-round upset of the Memphis Grizzlies with a 125-85 victory in Game 6 on Friday night. LeBron James scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the seventh-seeded Lakers, who emphatically clinched a playoff series in their own arena for the first time since 2012. The Lakers won all three of their home games in the series, and the final victory was a scary demonstration of their capabilities when James and Davis are both healthy. Davis’ imposing defensive presence largely shut down Memphis’ offense in Game 6, while Russell’s five 3-pointers highlighted an impressive offensive effort from a late-blooming team with championship aspirations. The Lakers took a 20-point lead in the first half and went up by 36 in the third quarter before coasting to victory b...

Katy Perry loses trademark battle over her name

Katy Perry has lost a trademark battle over her name. The pop star – who was born Katheryn Hudson – was sued for trademark infringement by Australian fashion designer Katie Taylor – who runs a clothing brand using her birth name of Katie Perry – and a judge Down Under ruled against the singer on Friday (28.04.23) by confirming the ‘Roar’ star had breached Katie’s trademark several times. In her ruling, Justice Brigitte Markovic wrote: “This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name.” The Katie Perry brand was set up in 2006 before being trademarked, and the designer claimed merchandise sold during the singer’s subsequent Australian tours were in breach. The judge found several infringements to have taken place in the singer’s social media posts promoting her ‘Prismatic Tour’ as well as at pop-up merchandise stores in Sydney and Melbourne during her shows in the country through out 2014 and 2015 and on a website for merchandising company Bravado. However...

BBC Chairman Richard Sharp Resigns Over Breach Of Code On Public Appointments

Image
BBC chairman Richard Sharp has resigned over a report that found he breached the code on public appointments. Sharp said he will stand down at the end of June after reading the findings of an investigation by barrister Adam Heppinstall KC’s into his appointment. The probe kicked off after it emerged that Sharp helped facilitate an £800,000 loan guarantee for Boris Johnson. Had Sharp not resigned, prime minister Rishi Sunak would have had to make a final decision on his future. In a statement, he said: “Mr Heppinstall’s view is that while I did breach the governance code for public appointments, he states that a breach does not necessarily invalidate an appointment. “Indeed, I have always maintained the breach was inadvertent and not material, which the facts he lays out substantiate. The secretary of state has consulted with the BBC board who support that view. “Nevertheless, I have decided that it is right to prioritise the interests of the BBC. “I feel th...

But according to the US Justice Department , “in reality, BAT continued to do business” there through its subsidiary BAT Marketing Singapore. A long-running US investigation found that in the following decade, the Singapore-based subsidiary earned about ...

Disney sues Florida governor Ron DeSantis over ‘targeted campaign of government retaliation’

Image
Disney has launched a lawsuit against Ron DeSantis (Unsplash) Disney has sued Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis, amid a months-long bitter feud.  The House of Mouse has launched legal action against DeSantis over his take-over of the park’s special district, filing the lawsuit just moments after an oversight board, appointed by DeSantis, voted against a deal which gave Disney design and construction control over its properties.  Disney claims voting against the deal will cost the company billions of dollars and the state thousands of jobs.  The entertainment giant said it “regrets that it has come to this”, stating in legal documents: “The Company is left with no choice but to file this lawsuit to protect its cast members, guests, and local development partners from a relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials.” Disney went on to say De...
