Barbados targets Benedict Cumberbatch as campaigners demand reparations over slave-owning ancestors

Benedict Cumberbatch’s family could be forced to pay reparations to Barbados for running a slave plantation on the island in the 18th and 19th century. The seventh great grandfather of the actor, who played the role of a plantation owner in the Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave, bought the Cleland plantation in St Andrew, Barbados, in 1728. The plantation then became home to 250 slaves until slavery was abolished more than 100 years later. When the plantation was forced to close, the Cumberbatch family were handed £6,000 in compensation for their loss of ‘human property’ – in today’s money that amounts to around £3.6 million. Keir Starmer Sets Out His Vision For 'Change' In New Year Message

Labour leader Keir Starmer has used his new year message to set out a vision of “change” for Britain. Setting out his stall for prime minister, Starmer promised that Labour will make the case for a “new Britain” in 2023. Politics experts say it shows Labour is in “prime position” with more than enough support to win a majority at the next general election. During his speech, to be released on Saturday, Starmer wishes the public a happy new year, while acknowledging that for millions “it’s been another very tough year”. He said: “2023 is a new chapter for Britain – with a new King to be crowned in May. “We must look forward to that with hope. But for hope to flourish, Britain needs to change. “The way working people are struggling this winter, the way our public services are on the brink, demands nothing less. “So this year, my Labour Party will set out the case for change. The case for a new Britain. The case for hope.” Starmer also said Labour would restore

Nelson Mandela’s diplomatic intervention in the Lockerbie bombing case sparked tensions with Tony Blair’s Labour government, the files reveal. No 10 staff feared that his bid to mediate between Sir Tony and Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was a bad idea. Pan Am flight 103 had been travelling from London to New York on December 21, 1988, when it exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people. As president of South Africa between 1994 to 1999, Mr Mandela had helped broker a deal which later saw two Libyan intelligence agents tried for the bombing. What a year. Three prime ministers minimum, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ad infinitum. Along with Putin and Zelensky, Rooney versus Vardy, and Brad Pitt in a skirt. There was the Oscars slap, the World Cup, the surge of inflation around the globe, the return of the humpback whale, the population surge to eight billion and the emergence of the Omicron variant — and you can’t blame them all on Liz Truss, although some tried. As we stride through the darkness into a new dawn, here are my heroes and villains of 2022. I would dearly love to rent the room that is to let in this old building in Aldgate, photographed by Henry Dixon for the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London. Founded by a group of friends who wanted to save the Oxford Arms, threatened with demolition in 1875, the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London touched a popular chord with the pictures they published of age-old buildings that seem to incarnate the very soul of the ancient city.
