HENRY DEEDES watches Suella Braverman facing down her critics

Image
Nothing gets opposition MPs’ nostrils flapping quite like the whiff of wounded minister in the air.  So naturally Suella Braverman’s arrival in the Commons late yesterday afternoon had them all baring their teeth – a school of sharks circling in freshly chummed water. The Home Secretary had come to make a statement on the Manston migrant processing centre in Kent, where conditions are said to have deteriorated dramatically on her watch. What with all that boring hoo-haa about using her private email to send official documents which forced her resignation first time round, Labour hopes were raised for getting her booted out again by the end of the week. As a steely-eyed Suella took her seat, the atmosphere tingled. Sat glaring at her over the Despatch Box opposite were the unlovely trio of Yvette Cooper, Emily Thornberry and the Shadow Leader of the House, Thangam Debbonaire. Marie Lenclos, Painter

Image
Click here to book for THE GENTLE AUTHOR’S TOUR OF SPITALFIELDS throughout November and beyond . Sandys Row, Spitalfields For some time, I have admired the paintings of Marie Lenclos , so I am delighted to publish this gallery of her East End streetscapes today . “My paintings capture a moment of seeing, when lines, light, colours and shapes fall into a particular order that makes sense to me. I am particularly attracted to the strong lines and clear compositions which I see all around me in my urban surroundings. My main sources of inspiration are the streets of London, particularly around Loughborough Junction where I live but, in the last year, I have been visiting East London, preparing an exhibition in Stoke Newington and travelled there by train from Denmark Hill. The journey itself offers many opportunities for paintings, as you can see in ‘Hoxton from the Train’ and ‘Haggerston’. This train journey with its changes brought about by light, time of the day, mood, weath...

Ivanka Trump shows off her toned legs in white denim shorts

Image
Ivanka Trump celebrated her 41st birthday in the Czech Republic on Saturday, having jetted into Europe to receive a posthumous award honoring her late mother Ivana – but despite her busy weekend of travel and celebration, the former First Daughter kicked off the working week nice and early on Monday when she was seen running some errands in Miami.  The 41-year-old mother-of-three put on a very casual display for her Halloween outing – taking full advantage of the warm Florida weather in a pair of white cut-off denim shorts and a simple white T-shirt, pairing her outfit with a pair of black flip flops.  She completed her look with a pair of sunglasses, which she had tucked into the neckline of her tee, and she was seen toting her Apple laptop and iPhone in one hand, while carrying an insulated coffee cup in the other as she made her way into her large black SUV outside her family’s luxury condo building.  The look was a far cry from the very glamorous ensemble Ivanka...

ROBERT HARDMAN visits farmers ravaged by Britain's biggest avian flu epidemic

Image
This place should be a riot of honking, quacking and clucking at this time of year. Instead, there is a deathly silence hanging over Fen Farm, deathly being the operative word. Alan Wharton’s entire flock of geese, ducks and chickens has gone — and not one of them has ended up on a plate. They were all casualties of the worst outbreak of avian flu in British history, carted off to an incinerator by government officials. Not that Alan was there to see it. He was too upset to leave the house that day (or the day after that). His wife, Tonya, dealt with the circus which turned up in white hazmat suits. ‘You wouldn’t believe the number of people down here. They even brought their own loos and a mobile office,’ says Tonya. ‘It looked like a crime scene. The neighbours probably thought I’d killed Alan and buried him under the patio.’ ROBERT HARDMAN: Make no mistake, the avian flu epidemic is worse than anything anyone can recall The hit squad even dispatched Winnie, Rosie ...

Shawn Mendes Dresses Up As Indiana Jones For Halloween: Photos

Image
Image Credit: GIO / BACKGRID Shawn Mendes was Indiana Jones for Halloween! The Canadian-born singer, 24, looked just like Harrison Ford in the classic action-adventure flicks as he was photographed heading to Kendall Jenner ‘s 818 Halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 29. Shawn nailed the look with an open green vest with nothing underneath, a side leather bag and beige pants. He was seen heading into the party with model and Kardashian-Jenner pal Winnie Harlow , who appeared to be Queen Cleopatra. More About Shawn Mendes Shawn Mendes arrives to a Halloween party with Winnie Harlow. (GIO / BACKGRID) In other photos shared to his Instagram, the Ontario native added the signature element to Indy’s look: his hat! “Give us the aux,” he wrote in the caption of photos alongside Winnie. Aux is a shortened term for auxiliary cord, which would be used to play music from a phone in a car or via DJ equipment — meaning the singer and model would be more than happy to handle tunes for ...
